Doyle Brunson is notably the most influential poker player in history and was one of the early pioneers of the game. Doyle didn’t always play poker though and he actually was a very smart man and wonderful athlete. Doyle attended the Hardin-Simmons University in Texas and played basketball while attending the university. After he graduated he was drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers to play basketball, but a knee injury abruptly ended his playing career.
Throughout his years in school he had become familiar with the game of poker and played in local games whenever he could to support himself. Once his knee injury took place he decided that he would give poker a more serious look and decided to travel the country playing in any games he could find. He and a few friends travelled around the country until they finally reached Las Vegas where they decided to settle and play poker. Back in these days poker wasn’t what it is nowadays and it was frowned upon by most of the public population.
Brunson was the first poker player to ever win $1+ million in a poker tournament and he also has a ton of other achievements. He won back to back WSOP main event bracelets in 76 and 77 which make him one of only a couple players to ever do this. Doyle has played in more tournaments then anyone else and he still remains to play in all of the big tournaments.
Over the past five years as poker has become popular around the world Doyle has been featured countless times on the television in a range of tournaments and poker games. You will find it nearly impossible to find someone with a bigger passion for the game, and I don’t even know if you could find someone. Doyle himself revolutionized internet poker and it’s now enjoyed by millions of people in every country imaginable.
Doyle took his popularity and also opened up an online poker room which today is running smoothly with a solid player base. He has also written numerous books with one of them in particular gaining a lot of popularity. The book was titles the “Super System” and gave people an inside look at the game of poker. It has since become outdated, but is still a great read for any poker player, young or old.
Doyle Brunson is also known as the “Texas Dolly” which is his nickname at the poker tables and he also has a poker hand named after him. The hand is any 10-2 off-suit and the reason this is his hand is because when he won back to back bracelets in the 70’s the winning hand was a 10-2 both times.
With Doyle Brunson, the PokerStar getting older each year many new young guns have taken the spotlight in the poker world, but this wouldn’t have ever happened without the Texas Dolly. Everyone who plays poker should know who Doyle is and why he is so important to the history of poker.
